My interest in the American Indian Movement is that I am part Native American. On my mom’s side, they are Creek Indian and on my dad’s side there is a tribe that’s unknown. I was interested in doing something involving Native American because only recently we started hearing about the Dakota Pipeline issue and before then nobody heard anything about Native American people. I was curious on how Native Americans were treated by the U.S government when segregation against blacks was very prominent. Another thing that had interested me in the topic of Native Americans was how not everyone knew the amount of mistreatment that Native Americans got when they were trying to fight for what little they have now. So far, my research has only been conducted over online and I haven’t gotten the chance to interview anyone about this topic and I have gotten a lot of reliable information online. Research has been conducted online as I have said. I have 8 primary sources and 12 secondary sources. There is a variety of different formats of information I have found; ranging from videos to interviews to photos and documents. The AIM has a lot of information on them which made it easier for me to find reliable sources. Most of the sources that I have collected connect to one another; for example, the timeline that I have, led me to consider other events the AIM group contributed to. I chose to do a website to present my research. So far, I haven’t started the website because I didn’t have all the sources I needed to even get a homepage for my website. I have started thinking about which information I will include in my website and which videos I will include. Wix will be used to create my website because that is what I am familiar with and it is more understandable. I haven’t yet decided whether I want to enter my project into NHD yet. On the website, there will be videos that’ll both informing and interesting. Photos that will really capture how Native Americans felt while going through this time in history. This is relevant to the theme of Taking a Stand because, AIM took part and even conducted many protest and many events that fought for the rights of the Native Indian people in the U.S. The group didn’t allow the government of the U.S to continuously break treaties that were made long ago, if the government succeeded in abolishing those treaties a mass amount of Native Indian tribes would not be what they are today. Native Indians were being mistreated and taken advantage of and the founders of AIM saw that, decided to make a change, and stand up for what was right and not allow the government to diminish their cause.
