AIM History

The American Indian Movement started because of the mistreatment Native Americans were experiencing in the U.S by its citizens and government. During the summer of 1968, about 200 members of the Native community in Minnesota, had met up to discuss the various issues there were arising. These issues included: poor condition housing, police brutalities, unemployment, and discriminatory policies that involved the local county's welfare system. From there on, the civil rights organization AIM was created.

AIM needed a way to get the public's attention whether it was positive or negative attention. The Thanksgiving of 1970 is when a group of AIM members painted the Plymouth Rock a bright red. Also they stole the Mayflower replica. This caused their supporters to no longer want to be involved with them and no longer support them and their decisions. Even though AIM lost many sympathizers, they had gained the media attention they were looking for.
